Our house used to get water from a well, which went dry because of drought and increased development in this area. See this article for more information. Given a choice between spending big bucks to move our pump lower, or bigger bucks to tap into a pipeline of surface water, we chose the latter due to the uncertain future of ground water in this area. We're lucky to have that choice - many homes around here don't have access to a pipeline like that.
